Fritz Wieninger, Vienna

Wiener Trilogie, 2012

Grape Varieties: Zweigelt, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon

Is it possible to create a red wine of international format from Zweigelt, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on Vienna's Bisamberg and Nussberg? Since Vienna is not the Arctic, but a quite hot spot at least in summer, there should be no doubt that the sweet and smoky 2012 Wiener Trilogie (trilogy of the mentioned varieties) could also please palates from other continents. Its dark fruit intensity, concentration and sweet charm as well as freshness and purity in the finish is typically Viennese, whereas the toasty nose and taste is quite international. With its bone-dry, slightly animal and grippy finish this Trilogie has a rather rustic charm – but at least there is charm.
